First, you want to think about what operating system you use the most. The most popular ones are Amazon Alexa, Apple Siri or Google Home system. Each provider has a variety of products that integrates better with one but it’s rare to have product that can be controlled by all three. This means when shopping for smart home products, make sure they are compatible with your preferred operating system.

Next, what you’ll want to think about is what do you want your home to do for you. How will a smart home improve your life. There are two ways a smart home can be used:

Smart Home Automation

Once you have a functional smart home system, you can program the devices to talk to each other to better predict your needs. The possibilities that can be achieved with smart devices are endless, the only limitation is your imagination. Some examples of home automation would include:

  • Turning off all the lights when you leave the house, motion detector can sense if anybody is on the room, turn on kitchen lights when you come downstair for a little snack

  • Has a temperature sensor in the shower that senses the humidity, locks the doors and adjusts the bedroom temperature for a personal turndown service.

  • Set a “Bedtime” scene that will set the bedside lamps at a level just right for comfortable reading

Smart Home Control

This means through one control point like an APP, a user has control over things such as Lighting, Appliances, A/C, Security Systems, Access Control, Sound Systems, Curtains, Blinds and even Vacuum Cleaners. Some examples smart home control would include:

  • Being able to control your devices from anywhere in the world.

  • Saying “Hey Alexa, turn off all the kitchen lights” or “Pre-heat the over to 450 degrees”

  • When you’re not home and want to come back to a toasty home, you can say “ Alexa, set the A/C to 22 degrees”

  • Close the blinds with one tap or by voice command

The best part is being able to check the status of each device in your home. This means you could check to see if you locked the door b4 bed or monitor the occupancy in any of your rooms. Everyone goes through their daily lives different so each user could customize their smart home as they see fit. The point is to be additive and should never make it harder to accomplish something. With the development of new smart products each year, it’s clear to see that homes are getting smarter and possibilities are endless.
